Carbon accounting is becoming a core professional skill as organisations, supply chains and regulators demand more transparency. Across the major mandatory climate and sustainability reporting frameworks, from CSRD/ESRS to ISSB-based regimes such as UK SRS, one requirement is common: measuring and disclosing an organisation's greenhouse gas emissions, with the GHG Protocol as the reference method. Mastering it is a foundation for any company's mandatory and voluntary sustainability strategy. These frameworks share an expectation of audit-ready numbers: clear boundaries, documented methods, traceable data and a credible account of uncertainty. These are exactly the skills covered in the course's standards and regulatory-framework learning outcome
Mastering the GHG Protocol is the foundation for any company's mandatory and voluntary sustainability strategy, and choosing the right sustainability training is a practical way for companies and individuals to stay competitive and compliant.
Sami Academy offers two training pathways, both taught in English by expert practitioners: a fixed-duration GHG Protocol course, and custom training tailored to an organisation's individual needs.
Which pathway is right for you? This article walks through the regulatory context, who benefits most, the full programme and how tailored training works, so you can decide with confidence.
Why technical accuracy now extends beyond the CSR team
Carbon data no longer sits with the sustainability team alone. Data quality, the choice between primary and secondary data, and uncertainty now involve finance, controlling, audit, operations and procurement. A shared method and a shared vocabulary reduce rework and make the final numbers defensible.
H2 The strategic stakes: why train your teams (and yourself) in carbon accounting
Who needs this training?
Companies: build your in-house skills.
Companies that bring sustainability up-skilling in-house become more autonomous in their strategy and reporting, with less reliance on outside services, and they can move projects forward on their own internal deadlines. This is particularly useful for sustainability, CSR and environment managers responsible for GHG reporting. Companies that train with Sami can produce their own carbon assessments, build their own decarbonisation pathways and produce audit-ready data for mandatory reporting.
Consulting firms: expand your climate services.
Consultancies specialising in carbon measurement can broaden what they offer clients, retain clients across projects and prepare for upcoming regulatory changes that call for product carbon footprinting. Firms that train with Sami build solid technical expertise and can advise clients on Scopes 1, 2 and 3 and on product and project footprints, relying on an internationally recognised standard, and get their clients ready for audit.
Career changers: build in-demand skills. Carbon accounting shows up in nearly every sustainability career today. Professionals pivoting into the field can train on the methods and projects practitioners use every day, and a structured, assessed programme gives credibility to their move. They can also prove their knowledge and experience to employers, many of whom use the Sami platform for carbon measurement.
Whether you are aiming for an in-house role or a career in consulting, carbon accounting is a skill that opens doors to your next professional opportunity. In practice, the programme is built for four audiences:
- sustainability, CSR and environment managers who own GHG reporting
- future freelance or in-house carbon accounting and climate strategy consultants
- finance, controlling, audit and operations professionals involved in carbon data
- anyone who needs an internationally recognised GHG Protocol method
From measurement to decision-making
Measurement is only the starting point. Calculation skills feed climate strategy directly: net zero roadmaps, reduction targets, quantified reductions and cost estimates all depend on a reliable baseline. The same skills strengthen internal decision-making and make it easier to communicate with clients, executives and other stakeholders.

Course objectives and the 15 assessable learning outcomes
At the end of this course, participants will feel comfortable completing a full corporate carbon footprint. They can apply the skills immediately to real projects relevant to their company, industry or field of interest. Progress is measured through a certifying assessment (details below).
The course outcome is broken down into six learning objectives, so participants can track their progress:
- Understand the steps of measuring an organisation's GHG emissions. You see the full pathway ahead, which makes it easier to build an action plan and roadmap.
- Deliver clear, credible, audit-ready calculations and disclosures. Get it right the first time, with confidence and without waiting on others.
- Navigate and apply leading standards. Stay aligned with teams across countries and industries.
- Adapt to varied situations and sectors. Use the Protocol in real industry scenarios.
- Strengthen decision-making and client communication. Base decisions on the leading standard in carbon accounting and learn to communicate them to stakeholders.
- Work towards professional recognition via the ISEP Register. ISEP approval of the course is in progress. Once confirmed, the route leads to ISEP's Technical Accountant Carbon Accounting (TACA) title and ISEP membership, subject to ISEP's own audit.
The course follows a natural progression, and each session builds on what was covered before, leaving ample time for practical application. The 15 learning outcomes (LO1 to LO15) are grouped into three themes:
Day-by-day syllabus
What will your learning look like, day by day?
Day 1: Context and fundamentals. Climate and regulatory background, the different types of GHG accounting, calculation principles, boundaries, methods and data, data quality and uncertainty.
Day 2: Organisational calculation. Standards, Sami software demo, organisational and operational boundaries, Scope 1, removals, biomass and land emissions, Scope 2, introduction to Scope 3.
Day 3: Scope 3 and product footprints. Calculating Scope 3 emissions, Scope 3 workshop on the Sami platform, product carbon footprints (goals and boundaries, life cycle inventory, LCA and interpretation).
Day 4: Project accounting, reporting and climate strategy. Scenarios, baselines and monitoring for project accounting, inventory management, emissions reporting, communication guidelines, net zero roadmaps, reduction targets.
Day 5: Climate strategy and certifying assessment. Quantifying and costing reductions through a concrete action plan, then the certifying assessment: knowledge paper, final assignment, presentation and oral defence, whole-class feedback.
H3 Teaching method, assessment and trainers
The course runs as a live virtual classroom led by practitioners, combining theory, sector case studies and hands-on exercises. A red-thread case is built step by step on the Sami platform, and groups are capped at 15 participants.
Assessment combines a case study (25%), a closed-book exam (25%), an open-book final assignment (30%) and a presentation with oral defence (20%). The pass mark is 70/100, with at least 50% in each section. Participants receive a certificate of attendance and a certificate of completion.
Trainers are carbon accounting professionals with five or more years of experience.

Tailor-made sustainability training: built around your business, challenges and data
Why a made-to-measure course is not an off-the-shelf module with a few tweaks
Sami's made-to-measure training is built around your business, your challenges and your data.
The five ways Sami tailors your training
- By sector: content and examples from your industry, backed by Sami's sector-specific methodologies.
- By role: adapted to the functions in the room, whether procurement, operations, finance or leadership.
- Through case studies: exercises built on your own emission sources.
- With software: hands-on practice with the tool, on your actual scope.
- Through format: duration, pace, on-site or remote, split across multiple sessions.
Practical information before you enrol
- Price: €2 000 excl. VAT per participant for open enrolment. Tailor-made training is quoted on request.
- Prerequisites: no academic prerequisite; basic sustainability knowledge is recommended. Working language is English.
- Equipment: a computer with camera and microphone, a stable connection and an up-to-date browser. Platform access is provided.
- Enrolment: a preliminary interview with a needs-analysis questionnaire, which also identifies accessibility needs. For tailored training, the first step is a scoping conversation with Sami Academy.
